School Aged Health Service (5 – 19 Years)

We understand the importance of ensuring that all school-aged children and young people in schools and academies have access to a school nurse. We believe that every child deserves the best possible care and support to grow into a happy and healthy adult.

We take pride in working in partnership with schools, supporting the development of health policies that impact all children and young people. We understand that every child is unique and requires individual attention, which is why we complement any health-related classroom-based programs that are being delivered.

Our school nurses provide confidential advice, care, and treatment to children and young people. They work with parents and carers in schools and other community settings to ensure that every child’s needs are met.

We take our role in the development of young people very seriously. We conduct screening programs, manage medical conditions, and serve as a point of contact for child protection concerns. We believe that every child deserves to grow up healthy and happy, and we are here to make that happen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can we help?

The school aged health service will:

  • Promote public health and healthy lifestyles.
  • Safeguard children from harm and reduce risk taking.
  • Provide health education and advice.
  • Participate in national campaigns and initiatives e.g. National Child Measurement Programme.
  • Work with children and young people who have complex medical needs

School drop-ins

We hold weekly secondary school drop-in sessions across B&NES. Pupils can use the time to talk to the nurse in confidence one to one about any health, wellbeing or personal concerns. To find out when the school nurse is holding a session at your child’s secondary school, either contact your local team to the right of the page or speak to your school receptionist or teacher.

Confidentiality

School nurses provide confidential advice, care and treatment to children and young people working with parents and carers within schools and other community settings. School nurses always encourage young people to discuss their health concerns or worries that are troubling them with their parents/carers first.

Although the school nurses offer a confidential service to young people, there are times when the school nurse may need to share information. Depending on their age and level of understanding, young people may be able to give their own consent to talk with a health professional.

How do I refer to this service?

The School Aged Health Service accepted self-referrals through school drop-ins which run in all secondary schools. Details of the drop-in day and times are advertised within each school. Young people can also contact a School Nurse using the CHAT health service, by texting 07507334357, and request a face-to-face contact, or can complete an on-line self-referral form here.

Children and young people can also be referred by parents/carers as well as other agencies such as education staff, GP and social care.

You can make a referral by contacting the Single Point of Access on 0300 247 0200, email bswchildrens.enquiries@hcrgcaregroup.com or by completing an online referral form here.

What happens next?

Upon receiving a referral or a self-referral a school nurse will make contact with the young person through school. Should additional information be required or parental discussion, this will take place prior to meeting the child in school.
